HTML Tables

HTML tables allow web developers to arrange data into rows and columns. The HTML tables allow web authors to arrange data like text, images, links, other tables, etc. into rows and columns of cells. The HTML tables are created using the <table> tag in which the <tr> tag is used to create table rows and <td> tag is used to create data cells. The elements under <td> are regular and left aligned by default

Define an HTML Table

A table in HTML consists of table cells inside rows and columns

How do you create a table in HTML?

To create table in HTML, use the <table> tag. A table consist of rows and columns, which can be set using one or more <tr>, <th>, and <td> elements. A table row is defined by the <tr> tag. To set table header, use the <th> tag.

Example

A simple HTML table:

<table>
  <tr>
    <th>Company</th>
    <th>Contact</th>
    <th>Country</th>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td>Alfreds Futterkiste</td>
    <td>Maria Anders</td>
    <td>Germany</td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td>Centro comercial Moctezuma</td>
    <td>Francisco Chang</td>
    <td>Mexico</td>
  </tr>
</table>

What are HTML tables used for?

The HTML table model allows authors to arrange data — text, preformatted text, images, links, forms, form fields, other tables, etc. — into rows and columns of cells. Each table may have an associated caption (see the CAPTION element) that provides a short description of the table’s purpose.

Table Cells

Each table cell is defined by a <td> and a </td> tag. td stands for table data. Everything between <td> and </td> are the content of the table cell.

Example

<table>
  <tr>
    <td>Emil</td>
    <td>Tobias</td>
    <td>Linus</td>
  </tr>
</table>

Table Rows

Each table row starts with a <tr> and end with a </tr> tag. tr stands for table row.

Example

<table>
  <tr>
    <td>Emil</td>
    <td>Tobias</td>
    <td>Linus</td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td>16</td>
    <td>14</td>
    <td>10</td>
  </tr>
</table>

Table Headers

Sometimes you want your cells to be headers, in those cases use the <th> tag instead of the <td> tag:

Example

<table>
  <tr>
    <th>Person 1</th>
    <th>Person 2</th>
    <th>Person 3</th>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td>Emil</td>
    <td>Tobias</td>
    <td>Linus</td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td>16</td>
    <td>14</td>
    <td>10</td>
  </tr>
</table>
